Drain fly larva
Psychoda spp.
- Order & Family
- Order: Diptera, Family: Psychodidae
- Size
- 4 mm to 10 mm in length
Natural Habitat
Found in polluted, shallow water or highly moist organic solids, most commonly in household drains, sewer pipes, and septic tanks.
Diet & Feeding
Consists of decomposing organic matter, fungi, algae, and bacteria found in the gelatinous film or slime layer of drains.
Behavior Patterns
Larvae live within the slime layer of plumbing; they use a breathing tube to take in air from the surface. They undergo complete metamorphosis, pupating near the surface of the slime before emerging as adults.
Risks & Benefits
Direct risks to humans are low as they do not bite; however, they can mechanically transport bacteria from sewers into living spaces. Beneficially, they help break down organic blockages in plumbing systems.
