Community identification
Fruit Fly pupa/larva (suspected)
Drosophila melanogaster
- Order & Family
- Order: Diptera; Family: Drosophilidae
- Size
- 2mm - 4mm in length
Natural Habitat
Typically found in indoor environments near ripening or decaying fruits, vegetables, and fermenting organic matter.
Diet & Feeding
Larvae feed on yeasts and microorganisms growing on decomposing organic material and overripe sugary fruit.
Behavior Patterns
Fruit flies undergo complete metamorphosis; they lay eggs on moist organic material which hatch into larvae (maggots) that eventually form a puparium (the stage pictured) before emerging as adults.
Risks & Benefits
They are primarily a nuisance pest in homes. While they do not bite, they can potentially contaminate food with bacteria and pathogens picked up from decaying matter. They are highly beneficial in scientific research as genetic model organisms.
