Boxelder Bug

Natural Habitat

Commonly found in residential areas near boxelder, maple, and ash trees; often seeks warmth on south-facing walls and enters buildings to overwinter.

Diet & Feeding

Mostly seeds and leaves of boxelder trees, but can also feed on maple, ash, and some fruit crops using piercing-sucking mouthparts.

Behavior Patterns

They are gregarious, often clustering in large groups on sun-warmed surfaces. The image shows two individuals mating. They undergo incomplete metamorphosis (egg, nymph, adult).

Risks & Benefits

Generally considered a nuisance pest rather than a threat. They do not bite or sting, though their excrement can stain surfaces and they can produce a foul odor if crushed.
