Fungus Gnat

Scientific Name: Bradysia spp.

Order & Family: Diptera, Sciaridae (Dark-winged fungus gnats)

Size: 1/16 to 1/8 inch (2-3 mm) long

Fungus Gnat

Natural Habitat

Damp, humid environments, especially common in potting soil of houseplants, greenhouses, and areas with decaying organic matter.

Diet & Feeding

Adult fungus gnats do not typically feed and are short-lived. Larvae feed on fungi, decaying plant matter, and sometimes the roots of plants.

Behavior Patterns

Adults are often seen flying or walking on the surface of soil, especially when disturbed. Larvae are found in the top inch or two of moist soil. They are attracted to lights and often found near windows.

Risks & Benefits

Potential risks include being a nuisance pest indoors. Larvae can damage the roots of seedlings and young plants, leading to wilting, stunting, or even death of the plant, especially in high infestations. They do not pose a direct health risk to humans or animals. Benefits are negligible in indoor settings, but in natural environments, they contribute to decomposition of organic material.
