Debris-carrying Lacewing Larva (often called 'Junk Bug' or 'Trash Bug')
Chrysopidae (larval stage, e.g., Chrysoperla spp.)
- Order & Family
- Order: Neuroptera; Family: Chrysopidae
- Size
- Approximately 1/8 to 1/2 inch (3 to 13 mm) in length.
Natural Habitat
Found on various plants, crops, gardens, and trees where high concentrations of aphids or other soft-bodied insects are present.
Diet & Feeding
Strictly carnivorous; they are voracious predators of aphids, mealybugs, scale insects, and other small arthropods. They are often called 'aphid lions'.
Behavior Patterns
Larvae use bristles on their backs to anchor debris, such as dust, lichen, or the carcasses of their prey, to camouflage themselves from predators like birds and ants. They move with an erratic, jerky motion.
Risks & Benefits
Highly beneficial to the ecosystem and gardeners as they provide natural pest control. They are generally harmless to humans, though they may occasionally deliver a minor, non-toxic nip if they land on skin.
