Ten-lined June Beetle

Scientific Name: Polyphylla decemlineata

Order & Family: Order: Coleoptera; Family: Scarabaeidae

Size: 20 mm to 35 mm (approx. 0.8 to 1.4 inches) in length.

Ten-lined June Beetle

Natural Habitat

Found in western North America, particularly in sandy soil areas, coniferous forests, and gardens near forested areas.

Diet & Feeding

Adults feed on the needles of coniferous trees (pines); larvae (grubs) live underground and feed on the roots of shrubs and trees.

Behavior Patterns

Adults are nocturnal and frequently attracted to porch lights. They are known for making a distinctive loud hissing sound when disturbed or touched by forcing air out of their spiracles.

Risks & Benefits

Generally harmless to humans; they cannot bite or sting, though their claws feel scratchy. While they are important ecosystem decomposers as larvae, high populations can occasionally damage the roots of ornamental plants or crops.
