Varied Carpet Beetle

Scientific Name: Anthrenus verbasci

Order & Family: Coleoptera; Dermestidae

Size: Typically 1.7 to 3.5 millimeters in length

Varied Carpet Beetle

Natural Habitat

Typically found indoors in homes, museums, and storage areas, especially near natural fibers like wool carpets, clothes, stuffed animals, or in darker, undisturbed places like attics and baseboards.

Diet & Feeding

Larvae feed on natural fibers including wool, fur, silk, feathers, dead insects, and dried leather. Adults primarily feed on pollen and nectar.

Behavior Patterns

Adults are attracted to light and often found near windows. The destructive stage is the larva (often called 'woolly bears'), which prefers dark areas and can go unnoticed while causing damage for long periods. They are attracted to materials stained with food, sweat, or oils.

Risks & Benefits

Risks: The larvae are a significant pest, causing damage to expensive clothing, rugs, furniture, and taxidermy. Their shed skins and tiny bristles can cause dermatitis or allergic reactions in some humans. Benefits: In nature, they act as decomposers of dead animal matter, though this benefit is rarely appreciated in domestic settings.
