Booklice

Scientific Name: Liposcelididae

Order & Family: Psocodea: Liposcelididae

Size: 1 - 2 mm (very small and often overlooked)

Booklice

Natural Habitat

Damp, warm environments such as under tree bark, in leaf litter, and indoors in humid areas like pantries, bookshelves, or bathrooms.

Diet & Feeding

They feed primarily on microscopic fungi, molds, starches (such as glue from book bindings), and organic debris.

Behavior Patterns

They are scavengers that prefer high-humidity conditions; they do not fly and move in quick, jerky motions. They undergo incomplete metamorphosis (egg, nymph, adult).

Risks & Benefits

They do not bite or transmit disease to humans. While they can be a nuisance or cause minor damage to stored products or old books, they are generally harmless and act as indicators of high humidity and potential mold growth.
