Drain Fly Larva
Psychodidae (family)
- Order & Family
- Order Diptera, Family Psychodidae
- Size
- 3 to 10 mm in length
Natural Habitat
Damp environments containing organic matter, such as drains, sewage pipes, septic tanks, and wet soil.
Diet & Feeding
Consumes the gelatinous biofilm of bacteria, fungi, and decomposing organic matter found inside plumbing and drains.
Behavior Patterns
The larvae live within the slime layer of drains. They are able to survive in low-oxygen environments and are often noticed when they crawl out of sink or bathtub drains to pupate.
Risks & Benefits
Generally harmless to humans and do not bite. While they can be a nuisance in large numbers and potentially spread bacteria from sewage through mechanical transfer, they also provide a benefit by breaking down organic clogs in drain pipes.
