Concrete Mite (often confused with Clover Mite)

Scientific Name: Balaustium spp.

Order & Family: Order: Trombidiformes, Family: Erythraeidae

Size: Approximately 1-2 mm in length

Concrete Mite (often confused with Clover Mite)

Natural Habitat

Often found on sun-baked surfaces like concrete sidewalks, brick walls, patios, and rock outcroppings. They thrive in dry, hot conditions.

Diet & Feeding

Predatory; they feed on other small arthropods, insect eggs, and especially pollen. Unlike clover mites (which feed on plants), concrete mites are beneficial predators.

Behavior Patterns

They are active runners often seen scurrying quickly across hot concrete in the spring and summer. They are solitary hunters rather than clustering in massive groups like some other mites.

Risks & Benefits

Harmless to humans and pets (they do not bite or transmit disease). They are considered beneficial because they prey on pest eggs and soft-bodied insects. However, if crushed, they can leave a red stain on fabric.
