Natural Habitat

Indoors, especially in undisturbed areas with natural fibers (carpets, woolens, furs, stored foods), occasionally outdoors in animal nests or carrion.

Diet & Feeding

Keratin-containing materials (wool, silk, fur, feathers), dried animal products, stored grains and food products.

Behavior Patterns

Larvae are typically slow-moving and hide in dark, undisturbed places. They feed on natural fibers and can cause damage to textiles. The adult beetles are often attracted to light and feed on pollen and nectar outdoors.

Risks & Benefits

Risks: Can cause significant damage to household items made of natural fibers, including carpets, clothing, and upholstered furniture. They can also infest stored food products. Benefits: As scavengers, they play a role in decomposition in natural environments, but indoor infestations are considered a pest problem.
