Nocturnal, fast-moving, and avoid light. They undergo hemimetabolous metamorphosis (egg, nymph, adult) and are unique among insects for continuing to molt after reaching adulthood, potentially living up to eight years.

They do not bite humans or spread disease, but they are considered household pests because they can damage books, photographs, and clothing. They also indicate a possible moisture or humidity issue in the home.
