Natural Habitat

Indoors they are found in carpets, upholstery, closets, under baseboards, and in stored textile or grain products. Outdoors they are found in bird or rodent nests.

Diet & Feeding

Larvae scavenge on natural fibers of animal origin such as wool, silk, fur, feathers, and leather, as well as dead insects and dried food products (grains/pet food).

Behavior Patterns

The larval stage is the longest part of the life cycle, lasting months to years depending on food availability. They are reclusive and move slowly using small hairs to navigate dark environments.

Risks & Benefits

They do not bite or spread disease, but their specialized hairs (hastisetae) can cause 'carpet beetle dermatitis,' an itchy allergic reaction or skin irritation in sensitive individuals. They are significant pests that cause damage to clothing, blankets, and heirloom textiles.
