Drain Fly Larva
Scientific Name: Psychodidae family (e.g., Clogmia albipunctata)
Order & Family: Order: Diptera, Family: Psychodidae
Size: 3 mm to 10 mm in length

Natural Habitat
Moist, organic-rich environments such as bathroom drains, grease traps, septic tanks, and wet compost.
Diet & Feeding
Decomposing organic matter, algae, bacteria, and fungi (biofilm) found in pipes and drains.
Behavior Patterns
Larvae live within the slime layer (biofilm) of drains. They are resilient to soap and hot water, breathing through small tubes while submerged. Their life cycle from egg to adult takes about 7 to 28 days.
Risks & Benefits
They do not bite or transmit diseases to humans. While they are a nuisance, they actually benefit the ecosystem by breaking down organic sludge in plumbing. However, large infestations indicate a need for drain cleaning.
