Natural Habitat

Moist environments containing organic matter, such as sewer pipes, bathroom drains, kitchen sinks, and compost piles.

Diet & Feeding

Decomposing organic matter, slime (biofilm), fungi, and bacteria found in drains and septic systems.

Behavior Patterns

Larvae are sub-aquatic and can survive in low-oxygen environments by using a breathing tube. They mature into adults in about 9 to 15 days depending on temperature.

Risks & Benefits

They generally do not bite or transmit diseases to humans but can be a nuisance. They provide a minor benefit by helping to break down organic clogs in plumbing, though large infestations indicate cleaning is needed.
