Natural Habitat

Damp, warm areas with high humidity such as basements, kitchens, and bathrooms. Often found among old books, under wallpaper, or in stored grain.

Diet & Feeding

Microscopic mold, fungi, algae, and organic starches. They often feed on the glue of book bindings or starchy material in processed foods.

Behavior Patterns

They are wingless and move with a characteristic jerky, running motion. They thrive in humidity above 50% and do not undergo a pupal stage, instead developing from nymphs to adults through simple metamorphosis.

Risks & Benefits

They do not bite humans or pets and do not spread disease. They are primarily a nuisance pest. Their presence can be an indicator of high humidity or mold issues that need to be addressed to prevent structural damage or other pest infestations.
