Springtail
Scientific Name: Collembola
Order & Family: Order: Entomobryomorpha (Elongate-bodied springtails) / Various families
Size: 0.25 - 6 mm, though most are 1-2 mm long.

Natural Habitat
Typically found in moist environments. Outdoors in soil, leaf litter, and under bark. Indoors, they are common in damp areas like basements, bathrooms, kitchens, and around overwatered potted plants.
Diet & Feeding
Feeds on algae, fungi, mold, and decaying organic matter. They are detritivores, helping to break down materials.
Behavior Patterns
Gets its name from a forked, spring-like appendage called a furcula, which is held under the abdomen and used to jump when disturbed. They are wingless and do not fly. Often appear in large numbers where moisture is abundant.
Risks & Benefits
Springtails are considered harmless to humans, pets, and property. They do not bite, sting, or transmit diseases. Their presence indoors in large numbers is primarily a nuisance and is a strong indicator of a moisture issue or leak. They are beneficial to the ecosystem as decomposers, recycling nutrients in the soil.
