Drain Fly (or Moth Fly)
Psychodidae
- Order & Family
- Diptera: Psychodidae
- Size
- 2mm to 5mm (approximately 1/16 to 1/4 inch)
Natural Habitat
Damp areas rich in organic matter, such as sewage systems, drain pipes, bathroom tiles, and compost piles.
Diet & Feeding
Larvae feed on the microscopic organic film (biofilm) and sludge found in drains; adults feed on liquid carbohydrates and nectar.
Behavior Patterns
They are poor fliers and are often found resting on walls near drains. They are most active at night. Their life cycle is rapid, completing in about 1 to 3 weeks.
Risks & Benefits
While they do not bite or transmit diseases to humans, large infestations can be a nuisance and may indicate plumbing issues or poor sanitation. They help decompose organic matter in waste systems.
