Bird Mite
Ornithonyssus sylviarum / Dermanyssus gallinae
- Order & Family
- Mesostigmata: Macronyssidae / Dermanyssidae
- Size
- 0.5 mm to 1.0 mm (barely visible to the naked eye; often appear as moving specks).
Natural Habitat
Bird nests, poultry houses, and occasionally indoor residences where birds nest nearby (e.g., eaves, vents, attics).
Diet & Feeding
Blood of avian hosts (birds). If their bird host leaves, they may bite humans and other mammals, though they cannot survive or reproduce on human blood alone.
Behavior Patterns
They are highly mobile and nocturnal feeders. When bird hosts fledge or die, mites migrate in large numbers to find new hosts, often entering homes through cracks or vents.
Risks & Benefits
Risks: Can cause intense itching, irritation, and dermatitis in humans (mite bites). They do not transmit bird diseases to humans. Benefits: None to humans; they are parasitic pests.
