Case-bearing Clothes Moth Larva
Scientific Name: Tinea pellionella
Order & Family: Lepidoptera, Tineidae
Size: Larvae are typically 10-14 mm in length. Adults are about 6-8 mm long with a wingspan of 9-16 mm.

Natural Habitat
Indoors, particularly in dark, undisturbed areas where animal-based products (wool, fur, feathers, hair) are stored. Less commonly found outdoors.
Diet & Feeding
Keratin-containing materials, including wool, fur, feathers, hair, felt, upholstered furniture, and occasionally synthetic fibers if mixed with wool. They are scavenging detritivores.
Behavior Patterns
The larva constructs a silken case, which it carries with it as it moves and feeds. This case is typically covered with fragments of the material it is feeding on, allowing it to camouflage effectively. When disturbed, the larva retreats entirely into its case. Adults are poor flyers and are attracted to dark areas. The female lays eggs on suitable food sources.
Risks & Benefits
Risks: Significant pest of textiles and stored products, causing damage to clothing, carpets, and other items made from animal fibers. Benefits: No known direct benefits to humans or ecosystems, primarily considered a household pest.
