Varied Carpet Beetle (Larva)

Natural Habitat

Typically found indoors in dark, undisturbed areas like closets, underneath carpets, behind baseboards, and in attics. In nature, they live in bird nests and animal dens.

Diet & Feeding

The larvae feed on keratin-based natural fibers, including wool, fur, silk, feathers, felt, dried skins, and dead insects. They can also damage synthetic fabrics if they are soiled with natural oils or food stains.

Behavior Patterns

The larvae are negatively phototactic (avoid light) and seek out dark crevices. They have a fuzzy appearance due to tufts of hair (setae). When disturbed, they may bristle these hairs or curl up. This is the destructive stage of the life cycle; the adults primarily feed on pollen outside.

Risks & Benefits

Risks: They are a significant household pest known for damaging clothing, carpets, and upholstery. The tiny hairs on the larvae can cause an allergic skin reaction (dermatitis) in some humans. Benefits: In the wild, they act as decomposers of dead animal matter.
