Natural Habitat
Found in dry, sandy soils and dust, often in tropical and subtropical climates including parts of Latin America, the Caribbean, and sub-Saharan Africa.
Diet & Feeding
Males and non-gravid females feed on host blood; the embedded female feeds on blood while developing eggs.
Behavior Patterns
The female flea burrows into the host's skin (usually on the feet), becomes permanent, and swells with eggs. After releasing hundreds of eggs over several weeks, the flea dies while still embedded.
Risks & Benefits
Causes tungiasis, resulting in severe inflammation, secondary bacterial infections, and potentially gangrene or tetanus if untreated. It provides no known ecological benefit to humans.
