Lily Leaf Beetle

Scientific Name: Lilioceris lilii

Order & Family: Order: Coleoptera; Family: Chrysomelidae

Size: 6 to 9 mm (approximately 0.25 to 0.35 inches) in length.

Lily Leaf Beetle

Natural Habitat

Found in gardens and forests where Lilium or Fritillaria plants are present; native to Europe and Asia but invasive in North America.

Diet & Feeding

Both larvae and adults feed exclusively on the leaves, stems, and buds of lilies (Lilium species) and fritillaries.

Behavior Patterns

Adults are strong fliers and will drop to the ground and play dead when disturbed. Larvae exhibit a unique behavior where they cover themselves in their own excrement (fecal shield) to deter predators.

Risks & Benefits

They are a major agricultural and horticultural pest capable of completely defoliating and killing lilies; they offer no significant benefit to North American ecosystems.
