Varied Carpet Beetle
Scientific Name: Anthrenus verbasci
Order & Family: Order: Coleoptera; Family: Dermestidae
Size: 1.7 to 3.5 mm (adults); larvae are typically 4-5 mm long.

Natural Habitat
Often found indoors, particularly in dark, secluded places like closets, attics, under rugs, inside upholstered furniture, and around bird or insect nests.
Diet & Feeding
Larvae feed on natural fibers (wool, silk, fur), dried plants, dead insects, pet dander, and other organic debris. Adults primarily feed on pollen and nectar.
Behavior Patterns
Larvae (woolly bears) are the damaging stage, often hiding in dark areas and causing destruction to fabrics. Adults are attracted to light and are often found near windowsills during spring.
Risks & Benefits
Risk: The larvae can cause significant damage to carpets, clothing, museum specimens, and upholstered furniture. The bristly hairs of the larvae can cause skin irritation or 'carpet beetle dermatitis' in sensitive individuals. Benefit: In nature, they help decompose dead organic matter.
