Diet & Feeding

Scavengers that feed on natural fibers, animal products, and organic debris including wool, silk, fur, feathers, leather, and accumulates of pet hair or dead insects.

Behavior Patterns

The larvae are slow-moving and covered in bristly hairs (hastisetae). They go through a complete metamorphosis, often remaining in the larval stage for months to a year depending on food availability and temperature.

Risks & Benefits

A significant household pest that can damage textiles and natural fibers. The bristly hairs can cause skin irritation or allergic reactions in some individuals, often mistaken for bug bites.
