Natural Habitat
Primarily found on domestic cats and dogs, though they can also be found on various wild mammals and in human indoor environments near pet bedding.
Diet & Feeding
Obligate hematophagy; both males and females feed exclusively on the blood of mammals.
Behavior Patterns
Fleas are wingless, laterally compressed insects that excel at jumping. They undergo complete metamorphosis (egg, larva, pupa, adult) and can remain in the pupal stage for several months until they sense vibrations or CO2 from a potential host.
Risks & Benefits
They are significant pests that cause irritation, allergic dermatitis, and can transmit pathogens such as Bartonella henselae (Cat Scratch Fever) and certain tapeworms. They offer no notable benefits to the ecosystem or humans.
