Varied Carpet Beetle
Scientific Name: Anthrenus verbasci
Order & Family: Order: Coleoptera, Family: Dermestidae
Size: Adults measure 2-4 mm (0.08-0.16 inches) in length.

Natural Habitat
Indoors, larvae are common in homes, museums, and warehouses, often found in carpets, upholstered furniture, clothing storage areas, and attics. Outdoors, adults are found on flowering plants.
Diet & Feeding
Larvae feed on natural fibers such as wool, silk, fur, feathers, and dried animal products like pet food, dead insects, and museum specimens. Adults primarily feed on pollen and nectar.
Behavior Patterns
Adult carpet beetles are often found near windows as they are attracted to light, or outdoors on flowers. Larvae, however, prefer dark, undisturbed areas where they can feed on organic materials. They are relatively slow-moving. The life cycle can take several months to a year depending on conditions.
Risks & Benefits
Potential risks include damage to personal belongings (clothing, carpets, furniture) and museum collections. Some people may experience skin irritation or allergic reactions from bristles shed by larvae. There are no significant benefits to humans, though they play a minor role in decomposition in nature.
