Case-bearing Clothes Moth (Larval case)

Natural Habitat

Found indoors, typically in dark, warm environments like closets, wardrobes, beneath carpets, and in storage boxes where natural fibers are kept.

Diet & Feeding

Larvae feed on keratin-rich animal fibers such as wool, silk, fur, feathers, felt, and sometimes hair or pet dander found in dust.

Behavior Patterns

The larva constructs a portable, cigar-shaped silken case around itself, which it carries as it moves. It enlarges the case with debris and fibers from whatever it is eating. They avoid light and are rarely seen in exposed areas.

Risks & Benefits

Risks: Significant pest of textiles; they can cause irrevocable damage to expensive clothing, rugs, and upholstery. Benefits: None in a household setting, though in nature they participate in the breakdown of animal matter.
