Obligate hematophages; they feed exclusively on the blood of warm-blooded animals, primarily humans.

Mainly nocturnal; they hide during the day and emerge at night for a blood meal. They undergo hemimetabolous metamorphosis from egg to nymph to adult.

Risks include itchy skin welts and allergic reactions from bites; they cause significant psychological distress and financial burden for eradication. They offer no known benefits to the ecosystem.
