Polygynous colonies (multiple queens) that spread via 'budding' (splitting off into new colonies) rather than swarming flights. Highly adaptable nesters.

Major pest in hospitals as they can spread pathogens (Salmonella, Streptococcus) to sterile equipment and patient wounds; difficult to control with standard sprays due to colony budding.
