Sculptured Pine Borer

Scientific Name: Chalcophora virginiensis

Order & Family: Coleoptera: Buprestidae (Metallic Wood-boring Beetles)

Size: 20 mm to 33 mm (about 0.8 to 1.3 inches)

Sculptured Pine Borer

Natural Habitat

Found in coniferous forests throughout eastern North America, particularly near pine and spruce trees.

Diet & Feeding

Adults feed on pine needles and tender bark; larvae (flathead borers) feed on the wood of dying or dead pine trees.

Behavior Patterns

Active during the day in sunny weather, often seen basking on logs. Larvae create winding galleries beneath the bark of host trees as they develop over several years.

Risks & Benefits

Generally not a threat to healthy trees as they prefer dead or dying wood, helping in the decomposition process of forest litter. They do not bite or sting humans.
