Violet Longhorn Beetle
Callidium violaceum
- Order & Family
- Order: Coleoptera; Family: Cerambycidae
- Size
- 8 to 16 mm in length
Natural Habitat
Coniferous forests, specifically found in dead or dying spruce and pine wood; often found in seasoned timber used for construction or firewood.
Diet & Feeding
Larvae feed on the dry phloem and outer sapwood of coniferous trees. Adults may feed on pollen or nectar.
Behavior Patterns
The beetle has a flattened body suited for moving under bark. It is typically active during the day from May to July. Larvae create wide, winding galleries packed with fine frass in the wood.
Risks & Benefits
It is considered a secondary pest of timber. While it rarely damages the structural integrity of buildings, it can emerge from newly constructed houses if infested wood was used. It plays an ecological role in decomposing dead coniferous wood.
