Natural Habitat

Indoor environments, particularly in closets, drawers, and areas where natural fibers are stored or where hair and dust accumulate.

Diet & Feeding

Keratin-rich materials including wool, fur, feathers, hair, silk, and felt. They also feed on dander and lint.

Behavior Patterns

Larvae construct a portable, torpedo-shaped case out of spun silk and fibers from the material they are eating. They carry this case while feeding and pupate inside of it. Adults are poor fliers and prefer darkness.

Risks & Benefits

Considered a household pest as the larvae can cause significant damage to expensive clothing, upholstery, and carpets. They do not bite humans or pets.
