Varied Carpet Beetle
Scientific Name: Anthrenus verbasci
Order & Family: Order: Coleoptera (Beetles), Family: Dermestidae (Skin Beetles)
Size: 2 to 3 millimeters (just over 1/16 inch) in length

Natural Habitat
Often found indoors in dark, undisturbed areas like closets, under furniture, in carpets, and near stored woolen fabrics or dried goods. In nature, they are found in bird or insect nests.
Diet & Feeding
Adults feed on pollen and nectar outdoors. The larvae (woolly bears) are the destructive phase, feeding on natural fibers like wool, silk, fur, feathers, hair, dead insects, and dried pet food.
Behavior Patterns
Adults are attracted to light and often found on windowsills. Larvae avoid light and prefer to stay hidden in food sources. They undergo a complete metamorphosis with a larval stage that can last several months depending on conditions.
Risks & Benefits
They do not bite or sting humans and are not known to transmit disease. However, the larvae can cause allergic dermatitis in sensitive individuals. Their primary risk is significant damage to carpets, clothing, museum specimens, and upholstered furniture.
