Natural Habitat

Warm, humid, and undisturbed environments, particularly where starchy materials or mold are present. Indoors, they are found in books, papers, stored food, wall voids, and damp areas. Outdoors, they live under bark, in leaf litter, or on fungi.

Diet & Feeding

Feeds on microscopic mold, fungi, starches, glues in bookbindings, paste, flour, cereal products, and other organic debris. They do not bite people or pets.

Behavior Patterns

Nocturnal and reclusive, often found in large numbers but difficult to notice due to their small size and cryptic habits. They thrive in high humidity and are often an indicator of moisture problems. Some species are parthenogenetic, meaning females can reproduce without males.

Risks & Benefits

Potential risks: Can cause damage to books, paper products, and stored food items, especially in high numbers. They are not known to transmit diseases or directly harm humans or pets, but their presence can be indicative of dampness and mold, which can be an allergen. Benefits: Primarily serve as decomposers in natural environments, helping break down organic matter.
