Sawtoothed Grain Beetle

Natural Habitat

Typically found in stored food products such as flour, cereal, sugar, dried fruit, pasta, and dry pet food. They thrive in pantries, grain silos, and warehouses.

Diet & Feeding

They feed on a wide variety of dried plant-based goods, including grains, cereals, breads, pasta, dried fruits, sugar, nuts, and dry meat. They do not feed on whole, undamaged grains but attack broken kernels or processed products.

Behavior Patterns

Adults are active and scurry quickly but rarely fly. They have a distinct flattened body shape that allows them to squeeze into tightly sealed packages. Their lifecycle (egg to adult) can complete in as little as 3-4 weeks in warm conditions.

Risks & Benefits

They pose no direct physical threat to humans (they do not bite or sting) and do not spread disease. However, they are a significant pantry pest capable of infesting and potentially contaminating large quantities of stored food, rendering it unfit for consumption.
