Varied Carpet Beetle
Scientific Name: Anthrenus verbasci
Order & Family: Coleoptera; Dermestidae
Size: Commonly 1.7 to 3.5 mm in length

Natural Habitat
Typically found indoors in dark, secluded areas closer to food sources, such as closets, under carpets, or inside furniture; outdoors they are found on flowering plants.
Diet & Feeding
Larvae feed on natural animal fibers like wool, fur, silk, leather, feathers, and dead insects; adult beetles feed on pollen and nectar from flowers.
Behavior Patterns
Adults are active during late spring and early summer and are attracted to light and windows. The larval stage is the destructive phase, lasting up to nearly two years in adverse conditions, hiding in dark crevices.
Risks & Benefits
They pose no direct physical threat to humans (they do not bite or sting), though larval hairs can cause allergic skin reactions (carpet beetle dermatitis). The primary risk is economic damage to textiles, clothing, carpets, and stored museum specimens.
