Diet & Feeding

Obligate hematophage; they feed exclusively on human blood several times a day.

Behavior Patterns

They are slow-moving and use specialized claw-like appendages to grasp coarse hairs. They cannot jump or fly. Their life cycle consists of three stages: egg (nit), nymph, and adult, typically lasting about 30 days.

Risks & Benefits

They cause intense itching (pediculosis pubis) and skin irritation due to an allergic reaction to their saliva. They are considered a nuisance and are primarily transmitted through close physical or sexual contact; they are not known to transmit diseases.
