Natural Habitat

Typically found indoors in dark, undisturbed areas such as under furniture, in closets, wool carpets, stored clothing, baseboards, and bird nests.

Diet & Feeding

Feeds on natural fibers and organic debris, including wool, silk, fur, feathers, hair, pet dander, dead insects, and dried plant products.

Behavior Patterns

Larvae prefer dark, secluded places and move slowly. They often molt several times, leaving behind empty brownish skins. Adult beetles are attracted to light and are often seen near windows.

Risks & Benefits

Risks: Can cause significant damage to fabrics, clothing, carpets, and taxidermy. Interaction with their bristly hairs can cause 'carpet beetle dermatitis,' an itchy allergic skin reaction in some humans. Benefits: In the wild, they act as general scavengers/decomposers.
