Natural Habitat
Indoors in homes, warehouses, and museums; specifically found in dark, undisturbed areas with access to animal-based fibers.
Diet & Feeding
Larvae feed on keratin-containing materials such as wool, fur, feathers, hair, silk, and occasionally leather or dried animal remains.
Behavior Patterns
Larvae construct a portable silken case incorporating fibers from their food source. They carry this case as they feed and eventually pupate inside it. Adults do not feed and are photophobic (avoid light).
Risks & Benefits
Significant pest risk to wardrobes, carpets, and upholstery; can cause irreversible damage to heirloom garments and natural fiber textiles. They provide no direct benefit to humans but aid in decomposition of animal matter in the wild.
