Scavengers consuming matter containing polysaccharides, such as starches and dextrin in adhesives. They eat book bindings, paper, photos, sugar, hair, dandruff, and organic debris.
Behavior Patterns
Nocturnal and move with a characteristic fish-like swimming motion. They undergo ametabolous development (larvae look like small adults) and can live for several years.
Risks & Benefits
They do not bite or transmit diseases to humans but are considered urban pests because they damage property like books, old papers, and wallpaper. They serve as a food source for spiders and centipedes.
