Natural Habitat

Gardens, agricultural fields, forests, and suburban landscapes throughout North America.

Diet & Feeding

Voracious predators of aphids, mites, scale insects, whiteflies, and other soft-bodied garden pests; often called "aphid lions."

Behavior Patterns

Larvae carry camouflage on their backs made of dead prey, plant matter, and debris to hide from ants and larger predators. They have sickle-shaped mandibles for piercing prey and sucking out body fluids.

Risks & Benefits

Extremely beneficial for biological pest control in gardens and agriculture. They do not pose a risk to humans, though they may occasionally deliver a minor, non-toxic nip if handled incorrectly.
