Mealybug
Pseudococcidae (family)
- Order & Family
- Order: Hemiptera, Family: Pseudococcidae
- Size
- 1 to 4 millimeters in length
Natural Habitat
Typically found on the stems, leaves, and roots of indoor and outdoor plants in warm, moist environments.
Diet & Feeding
Herbivorous. These insects use their piercing-sucking mouthparts to feed on plant sap (phloem), which can weaken the host plant.
Behavior Patterns
Mealybugs are slow-moving and often cluster together in protected areas of plants. They secrete a white, waxy, cotton-like substance for protection and excrete 'honeydew', a sticky substance that can lead to sooty mold growth.
Risks & Benefits
They are significant agricultural and horticultural pests that can stunt plant growth, cause leaf yellowing, and spread plant viruses. They have no significant benefits to humans or the ecosystem and are often difficult to control.
