Bird Mite
Ornithonyssus sylviarum (Northern Fowl Mite) or Dermanyssus gallinae (Red Poultry Mite)
- Order & Family
- Order: Mesostigmata; Family: Macronyssidae or Dermanyssidae
- Size
- 0.5mm to 1.0mm in length (barely visible to the naked eye, appearing like moving specks of dust).
Natural Habitat
Nests of wild or domestic birds; often move indoors when bird hosts leave the nest, entering through cracks, vents, or windows.
Diet & Feeding
Blood of birds (primary host) but will opportunistically bite humans and other mammals if their primary hosts are unavailable.
Behavior Patterns
They are highly active crawlers that search for a host to feed on. While they can bite humans, they cannot survive or reproduce on human blood alone and will eventually die off without a bird host.
Risks & Benefits
Bites can cause intense itching, red bumps, and skin irritation in humans. They are not known to transmit diseases to humans but are significant pests to the poultry industry.
