Natural Habitat
Indoors, they are commonly found in carpets, wool rugs, upholstered furniture, and closets. Outdoors, they inhabit gardens and are often seen on flowers.
Diet & Feeding
Larvae scavenge on natural fibers such as wool, silk, fur, feathers, and dead insects. Adults feed on pollen and nectar from flowers.
Behavior Patterns
Adults are active during the day and are attracted to light, often seen near windows. The larvae prefer dark, undisturbed areas. Their life cycle from egg to adult usually takes about a year.
Risks & Benefits
They do not bite or transmit disease, but the larvae are significant household pests that can damage clothing and carpets. Some people may develop a skin rash (dermatitis) from contact with larval hairs.
