Drain Fly Larvae (Psychodid fly)
Psychodidae family (e.g., Psychoda spp.)
- Order & Family
- Order: Diptera, Family: Psychodidae
- Size
- 3 to 10 mm in length
Natural Habitat
Stagnant, organic-rich water sources like sink drains, sewers, septic tanks, and polluted shallow water.
Diet & Feeding
Decomposing organic matter, algae, bacteria, and fungi found in biofilm or slime layers.
Behavior Patterns
Larvae live in the gelatinous film of drains and are highly resistant to temperature changes and low-oxygen environments. They pupate within the biofilm before emerging as fuzzy, moth-like adult flies.
Risks & Benefits
Generally beneficial as decomposers in sewage treatment; however, in homes, they are pests indicating sanitation issues and can potentially mechanically transport bacteria like E. coli if they emerge in large numbers.
