Natural Habitat
Typically found in coarse human body hair, most commonly pubic hair, but can occasionally be found in eyelashes, eyebrows, armpits, or chest hair.
Diet & Feeding
Obligate hematophagy; they feed exclusively on human blood several times a day.
Behavior Patterns
They are slow-moving and use specialized claws to grip onto hair shafts. They cannot jump or fly. They stay close to the skin for warmth and feeding, usually surviving only 24–48 hours away from a human host.
Risks & Benefits
Risk: Causes intense itching (pruritus) due to an allergic reaction to their saliva. While they do not transmit major diseases, secondary bacterial infections can occur from scratching. There are no known ecological benefits to humans.
