Natural Habitat
Damp, cool, and dark locations such as basements, bathrooms, attics, and kitchens; often found near paper and adhesive products.
Diet & Feeding
Degenerate organic matter, specifically carbohydrates such as sugars and starches (found in book bindings, carpet, clothing, coffee, dandruff, glue, paper, and photos).
Behavior Patterns
Nocturnal and fast-moving; known for their "fish-like" swimming motion. They undergo hemimetabolous metamorphosis (egg, nymph, adult) and can live for several years.
Risks & Benefits
Generally harmless to humans as they do not bite or spread disease; however, they are considered household pests because they can cause significant damage to books, wallpaper, and fabric.
