Natural Habitat

Human dwellings, specifically in sleeping areas, cracks, crevices, mattress seams, and upholstered furniture.

Diet & Feeding

Obligate hematophages; they feed exclusively on the blood of warm-blooded animals, primarily humans.

Behavior Patterns

Nocturnal and elusive. They undergo five nymphal stages (instars) and require a blood meal to molt into the next stage. They are attracted to carbon dioxide and body heat.

Risks & Benefits

Risks include itchy skin welts, allergic reactions, and psychological distress/insomnia. While they are not known to transmit diseases to humans, infestations are difficult and costly to eradicate. They provide no known ecosystem benefits in domestic environments.
