Natural Habitat

Found on the undersides of leaves of Hackberry trees (Celtis species), often in urban and suburban landscapes.

Diet & Feeding

Plant sap (phloem) extracted from hackberry tree leaves.

Behavior Patterns

Nymphs produce abundant white, waxy filamentous secretions for protection. They congregate in colonies and produce large amounts of sticky honeydew.

Risks & Benefits

Can cause premature leaf drop and produces honeydew that leads to black sooty mold on cars and sidewalks. Generally not harmful to humans directly, but a nuisance pest.
